2016 was a near-perfect growing season thanks to ideal weather conditions, giving Napa Valley another winner in a string of historic vintages. Spring budbreak came early due to dry and warm soils from a drought winter. Minimal heat spells and cool nights across the summer months allowed the clusters to ripen slowly and evenly while protecting their vitally important natural acidity. The friendly weather also allowed us to begin harvesting Cabernet in August. 2016 produced a very clean, concentrated crop. The Napa reds will almost certainly be able to rival the best vintages of the last decade.
The saying of big things come in small packages is true when it comes to the 2015 vintage. While the yields were low, the quality was high. The growing period began with uncommonly warm temperatures in the late winter and early spring which resulted in an early bud break and bloom. Alpha Omega started and completed harvest the earliest in its history. The beauty of this vintage is that a limited number of 100+-degree days bolstered the fruits’ concentration and power. The vintage left us with a round, voluptuous profile, which we complemented by extracting plenty of tannin to support it. The results are very complex and full wines.
Balanced and elegant wines are the hallmarks of the 2014 vintage, a rock star crop similar to 2012 in terms of the characteristics. The weather was near perfect, and, for the first time, there was no effect of the drought on the vines which by now were accustomed to the dry spring. Harvest began early and by mid-August even the Cabernet Sauvignon had ripened, thus protecting the acidity of the wines.
We had some heat spikes that delayed the phenolic ripeness and forced us to push extraction quite hard. The ripeness was there, but the color and tannins really took time to come out. Our 2014 red wines are powerful but with great structure. Patience was the key to this vintage.
Patterning itself after the top estates of Bordeaux, Alpha Omega offers a dynamic second wine brand, Two Squared. These wines are designed to be approachable in both flavor and price. Opulent, fruit-driven and generous, with a backbone of acidity and elegance, these wines are produced by masterful blending across terroirs evocative of Napa Valley’s modern style. TWO2 is the best of both worlds in its inspiration and creation.
In 2017, the vines encountered early heat prior to the berries going through veraison. We usually see natural acidity maintained in white grapes as ripening often happens before the hottest days occur late in season. Aided by naturally thicker skins and the implementation of shade cloth in the vineyard, the early heat events basically left us unaffected. Patience was required as vines tend to slow down at higher temperatures extending the berries’ phenolic ripening.
